چکیده

Black carbon (BC) emission factors were measured for a California commuter rail line fleet of diesel-electric passenger locomotives (Caltrain). The emission factors are based on BC and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in the exhaust plumes of passing locomotives, which were measured from pedestrian overpasses using portable analyzers. Each of the 29 locomotives in the fleet was sampled on 4e20 separate occasions at different locations to characterize different driving modes. The average emission factor expressed as g BC emittedperkgdiesel consumedwas0.87±0.66 gkg 1 (±1 standarddeviation,n1⁄4362 samples). BCemission factors tended to be higher for accelerating locomotives traveling at higher speeds with engines in higher notch settings. Higher fuel-based BC emission factors (g kg 1)weremeasured for locomotives equippedwith separate “head-end”powergenerators (SEP-HEPs),whichpower thepassengercars, whilehigher time-based emission factors (g h 1) were measured for locomotives without SEP-HEPs, whose engines are continuously operated at high speeds to provide both head-end and propulsion power. PM10 emission factors, estimated assuming a BC/PM10 emission ratio of 0.6 and a typical power output-to-fuel consumption ratio, were generally in line with the Environmental Protection Agency's locomotive exhaust emission standards. Per passengermile, diesel-electric locomotives in this studyemit only 20% of the CO2 emitted by typical gasolinepowered light-duty vehicles (i.e., cars). However, the reduction in carbon footprint (expressed in terms of CO2 equivalents) due to CO2 emissions avoidance from a passenger commuting by train rather than car is appreciably offset by the locomotive's higher BC emissions. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Measurement of the Energy Use and Emissions of Passenger Rail Locomotives Using a Portable Emission Measurement System

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate methodology for in-use measurement of dieselelectric passenger railroad locomotives using a Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS). The methodology was developed and demonstrated based on railyard load tests of three locomotives, including one GP40 and two F59s. These locomotives have mechanically governed prime mover engines ranging from 140 to ...

Diesel engines: environmental impact and control--a critical review introduction.

Diesel engines are widely used to power trucks, buses, passenger cars, locomotives, and ships. These engines power the heavy equipment that plants and harvests crops, tills soil, clears and reshapes land for roads and buildings, and hauls ores from mines to processing centers. Diesel engines generate electricity as portable power sources, peaking units, and emergency backups when line power is ...

Safe Harbor: Protecting Ports with Shipboard Fuel Cells

With five of the largest harbors in the United States, California is beginning to take steps to manage the large amounts of pollution generated by these bustling centers of transport and commerce. One option for reducing diesel emissions is the use of fuel cells, which run cleaner than diesel and other internal combustion engines. Other technologies being explored by harbor officials are diesel...

Pathways to Reduced Transportation CO2

This report explores pathways to reducing transportation based carbon dioxide emissions in the United States. The goal is to analyze the feasibility of reducing the level of transportation based carbon dioxide emissions in 2050 to 50% of the level they were at in 2005. Emissions have been steadily rising over the past century, and if left uncurbed, will have a negative effect on the quality of ...

Black carbon, particle number concentration and nitrogen oxide emission factors of random in-use vehicles measured with the on-road chasing method

The chasing method was used in an on-road measurement campaign, and emission factors (EF) of black carbon (BC), particle number (PN) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were determined for 139 individual vehicles of different types encountered on the roads. The aggregated results provide EFs for BC, NOx and PN for three vehicle categories: goods vehicles, gasoline and diesel passenger cars. This is the f...
